Not much of an update...

Hi:

It's Grover.

Listen, we are so thankful for your kind words and generous prayers and helpful/hopeful emails. You cats (and your peoples!) are amazing. Thank you! It really does feel like it's been one medical drama after the other - with Piggy getting so sick last December and then getting seemingly better a few months ago, and then getting wonky heart on September 15th...and now Vito.

My mom misses him so much and wanted to go visit today but the hospital won't let her. They have Vito in isolation as they feel he may be contagious. They will call later to discuss Metacam because they cannot get the fever down.

My mom made a HUGE mistake and googled Metacam and found this freaking nightmarish site, so now she's all "Um...", but so many of you have told us that you have NEVER personally heard of any cat dying from this drug, so we're going to stick with y'all instead of the bulk of the scary info available online for masochistic people like my mom who tend to torture themselves with worse case scenarios...

More info soon, we hope.

Again, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Even from mine.

Luv,

Grover

We hope your brother is getting better. Our Ninja had to take metacam and it did not hurt her. We just kept checking her kidney values every few weeks.

We are sending strong purrs to help him get better.

That is a nightmare of a site, to be sure, and our mewmie said she is sure much of the bad news was due to improper dosing of Metacam.

The dosage we use at the cat hospital I work at for 10# cat is 0.09ml of the 1.5mg/ml strength, every 24 hours, or 0.19ml of the 0.5mg/ml strength (we use very small insulin/tb syringes to dose out those very small amounts)

Oh my goodness! We missed yesterday's post about poor Vito! We are sending him lots and lots of healing vibes! We purray he gets better and can come home very soon!

A note on Metacam.... our mom read the same nightmarish site when the vet prescribed it for Maggie May and her luxating patellas. Maggie May was on Metacam for a good few weeks, if not longer, before and after her surgeries and she was and is just fine.

oh poor Vito! we don't have experience with metacam, but usually people only post scary stuff about medicine on the internet. the good stuff doesn't get posted.

we will send many many healing purrs and prayers for Vito's quick recovery and return home.

OH, we is purring hard dat Vito's fever breaks afore he needs drastic measures. Hendrix is right, dey only put stuff about medi-sin online when dey haf a complaint. Yoo don't usually see people praising something or someone when it goes good. Except on da CB, we love to talk about da good stuff!

Do not torture yourself with that site, there's a huge amount of incorrect information on it and it contains many anecdotes from people who got the doses wrong or gave the drug in the wrong way. The site ought to come down because it scares people off using a very effective and safe drug.

The drug works safely and well at the right doses and vets always go for the lowest correct dose for weight.

If a cat has an existing liver or kidney issue then sometimes the use of Metacam allows that issue to show up because it affects the normal prostaglandins in the body (they provide some anti-inflamatory effect for some organs) - it doesn't itself cause kidney or liver problems. That site is a real frightener. Our vet explained to us about why Metacam gets it's undeserved bad name and explained exactly how the drug works.

It's a very useful drug and it's saved our Gerry's life when his FCV fever was rampant.

We send Vito and you all rumbly purrs and love
